Phonedroid

PhoneDroids (フォンドロイド, FonDoroido?) are the most popular brand of mobile phone/tablet hybrids (i.e. phablets) in the Robotics;Notes world of 2019–2020. They are initially seen in the Science Adventure series as early as 2015 in Chaos;Child, and by 2019, they have become integral to the lives of millions of people worldwide.

PhoneDroid-brand phablets, as well as other in-universe phablets, are colloquially referred to as PokeComs (ポケコン, PokeKon) in the in-universe version of Japan. "PokeCom" is short for "Pocket Computer."

The name "PhoneDroid" is likely a reference to the real-life Android brand, while the name "PokeCom" may be a reference to Pokémon: "Pokémon" is short for "Pocket Monsters," while "PokeCom" is short for "Pocket Computer." The word "PokeCom" is also somewhat similar to the Japanese word for a PC, "pasocom" (パソコン, pasokon), which is short for "personal computer."

Technical aspects[]

A PhoneDroid is about 7 inches in length or smaller and comes with a built-in camera. Its OS implements both voice and touch commands. In terms of hardware, PhoneDroids are largely similar to modern real-world smartphones and tablets. However, IRUO., a full-featured augmented reality PhoneDroid app, has no true real-world equivalent aside from AR apps such as Pokémon Go or Ingress, which are much more limited in scope.

Usage[]

Characters are most often seen using the PhoneDroid to accept and make phone calls, check Twipo, and access the IRUO. network. The main character, Kaito Yashio, is most often seen playing the game Kill-Ballad on his PhoneDroid.

The PhoneDroid is such a common aspect of daily life that most individuals carry one with them in a personalized case at all times, even during school. The PhoneDroids themselves are also often given personalized covers or otherwise decorated with stickers.

Trivia[]

  • Though their wide worldwide usage would not occur for several years, Sister Centipede notes that PhoneDroids were publicly available as early as 2009 in-universe.
